CLASS PHILOSOPHY:

The Fitness for Life program is designed to help students accomplish three main objectives: (1) acquire knowledge about the principles of fitness and benefits of physical activity to health and wellness, (2) become physically active while pursuing goals to become physically fit, and (3) become an independent decision maker who can plan his/her own fitness program.

We will focus on the five health-related components of fitness:  cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition.  The class uses the integration of classroom lessons and related physical activities.  Students will use the classroom one/two days a week (40%) and participate in fitness activities three/four days a week (60%).  J

ASSESSMENT & GRADING:

Attendance is critical for all gym activities.  All daily points are missed if the student is non-suited, fails to participate, or fails to make up work missed due to an excused absence.  No penalty will be received when students are involved with school-related activities.  However, all classroom assignments must be made up. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make up the work.

Your grade will be determined by:  Classroom work (includes homework, tests, current events, and research), Activity participation (includes dressing down for physical activities—one day will be devoted to cardiovascular exercise and/or individual or team activities and another day for weight training, attitude, etc). If you are absent from an activity: that excused absence/activity can be made up by completing a P.E. report-form, along with a fitness make-up day (30 minutes of exercise supervised by a PAHS P.E. teacher. I may consider other arrangements).  A maximum of 2 activity make-ups are allowed per Triad.

P.E. ATTIRE (Dressing down):

Students are REQUIRED to dress down for activities (60% of semester grade).  You are required to suit in all P.E. classes with proper PAHS shorts, shirt with PA Phys Ed logo and shoes.  You will not be excused from dressing down because of athletic and/or school related events later in the day, losing gym clothes, and/or illness (if the illness is severe, you must have/get a physicians note to be excused).  Non-suits are one of the most prevalent ways of failing the P.E. portion of Fitness for Life.  All I ask is for you to suit-up and do your best in all activities.

Not allowed are book bags, hats, cargo shorts/pants, tank tops or any attire with sexual innuendo or drug/alcohol references, and any student with stomach or chest showing,.  If a student is dressed inappropriately, he/she will be considered a non-suit and not allowed to participate. No gum, food, or drinks are allowed in the gym, weight room, or outside courts.

END OF CLASS:

Students will help put away equipment before being dismissed.  *The service road may not be crossed. Stay in the gym or just outside the door until the bell rings. If any student leaves the class w/o permission, you are truant and a referral will be written.

(*A Referral will be given to a student who does not follow this expectation.)

LOCKERS:

LOCK UP YOUR SCHOOL CLOTHES & BAGS IN YOUR ASSIGNED LOCKER.  The large green lockers are to be used during your class period ONLY.  Clothes can be left overnight in the small yellow lockers.  Check your locks. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS!
